ETEC 540 Linking Assignment 1.       https://blogs.ubc.ca/zhu540/2025/03/02/task-10-attention-economy/ While we shared the same frustration like time pressure and counterintuitive buttons when playing with User Inyerface, I particularly like the point Jaime pointed out as it is because web designer know too well how audience mind works that they managed to create such a not-so-user-friendly website. Jaime made her way far more than where I landed and can tell how frustrated even when she was compiling this task. A good reflection point is how easy phone could hack human psychology. This explains why and how TikTok becomes such a success to capture human’s attention by predicting what people in front of the screen would be interested in by analyzing screen time, search history, chat history, or just everything that leaves trail. The two TED talks quoted are relevant.  Further reflection, what can be the implication to pedagogy based on the terrible exper...

ETEC 540 Task 9  Network Assignment Using Golden Record Curation Quiz Data  After file loaded, the quiz data result looks a bit random to me at first sight. Then I load by community and target, while some of the dimensions are confusing (see graph on left hand), I roughly fumbled my way and try to find pattern of selection by communities.  My selection critieria when doing the survey is simple - try to include as much diversity as possible to represent different races, countries, culture, across history era, in order to represent whole human concept. The interactive graphs show some correlation between the selector community background and the songs they choose but not significant. Given the missing data regarding the selectors background (education background, nationality, age, gender etc.) the facet dimensions are blurred. The selections made by participants often reflect their cultural backgrounds, personal values, and interests. For example, someone from a W...

ETEC 540 Task 12:  Speculative Futures " Describe or narrate a scenario about a bottle found a generation into a future in which “progress” has continued. Your description should address issues related to environment and elicit feelings of awkwardness." Microsoft Copilot generate: In the year 2125, the word "progress" had taken on new, complex connotations. The world had been reshaped by technological advancements and environmental interventions that promised a brighter future but left shadows of awkward reality in their wake. On a bleak, fog-filled morning, a group of teenage eco-enthusiasts trudged through a forest in the New Territories of Hong Kong. They were part of a generation dedicated to restoring the planet after centuries of exploitation. Armed with sensors and drones, they scoured the land for traces of human impact, hoping to uncover relics that narrated the tale of their ancestors. One of the teens, Mei, stumbled upon a half-buried bottle lodged in th...

ETEC 540 Task 10: Attention Economy I tried over 5 times but still failed to proceed to the next page. The page is terribly designed: 1. On portal page, the click " click HERE to GO to next page " does not work by click the underlined, nor BOLDED word, nor coloured word. Confusing enough, I tried to click everywhere on the page and randomly, I was directed to the first page of test. 2. Before I realize what just happened, the first test design is confusing and misleading: - password set up first, email second; - the instruction to set up password is small, in green colour, making it hard to read. The requirement for password set up is complicated. - default setting is NOT agree with terms & conditions. To proceed next, user need to untick the box. - bolded instruction button is Cancel, rather than Next -when type in email, the background word does not disappear by themselves. Rather, user need to delete the background instruction word in grey by themselves. - after trial...

Task 11: Option 2 Text-to-Image It is surprising and disappointing that Copilot has failed to generate S&P 500 index performance for the past 30 years which are public and historical data. Based on several attempts, Copilot seems to be good at generating images based on inputted descriptions instead of picking up information from the instruction, find or process the public information and historical data to generate images accordingly. The style of images generated share similarities regarding pixels, colour scheme and styles. Next, I tried a different topic. First attempt is general, second attempt I added 1 year old information. However, the image pops out with 3 boys! Then I put "1 year old" information before twin boys in my instruction. The image showed up alright with toys suitable for one year old babies featuring bright colors. This exercise made me doubt the ability for Copilot to understand human's instruction and different ways to present the same instruc...
